The Jio 5G Phone launch date in India is now near and there are a lot of rumors about the device. The Jio 5G phone is expected to be an ultra-low-cost 5G phone as Jio wants to take 5G to the masses. For the past several months, news has been pouring in about the price of Jio 5G phones in India. During last year’s AGM, Reliance Jio announced that it is partnering with Google to bring affordable 5G phones to India. The Jio-Google 5G phone has been kept a secret, but here are a few things we know so far.
Jio 5G Phone launch date in India
The Jio 5G Phone India launch is believed to take place on June 24 during the Reliance AGM 2021. The company hasn’t confirmed it yet, but it makes sense that the Jio-Google phone was first mentioned at last year’s AGM. Reliance AGM 2021 will be live-streamed on YouTube from 2 PM IST.
Jio 5G phone price in India
According to several reports in the past, the price of Jio 5G phone in India could be around Rs 2,500. The subsidized 5G phone will help millions of existing 2G feature phone users access 5G. Jio will likely offer its 5G phones with Jio 5G plans, but details on this are scant at the moment. “Jio wants to bring the device under Rs 5,000. When we increase sales, it may cost between Rs 2,500-3,000,” a company official told PTI in October.
200 million Jio Android phones expected to ship
Reports from last year also mentioned that Jio has asked local manufacturers to produce and manufacture 20 crore Jio Android phones in 2021. This will likely include 5G and 4G Android phones. “It’s been secretly working with assemblers on prototypes for at least two years and could bring phones to market faster, though November is likely to miss the Diwali shopping season,” sources told Bloomberg in September.
Jio 5G phone will run on custom Android OS
The upcoming Jio 5G phone is said to run on a customized Android version. We are not sure whether the device will run on Android Go or a completely new forked version of Android. We don’t know what this version of Android will look like yet, but it is expected to be optimized for entry-level phones with less RAM and storage, such as Android Go. Google announced the Android Go initiative to help millions of feature phone users switch to smartphones in emerging markets like India. In this way, the ambitions of both Google and Jio are organically fulfilled.
Jio 5G phone can run on Qualcomm chipset
In addition to partnering with Google last year, Jio also struck deals with Qualcomm, Intel and Facebook, among others. With the Qualcomm partnership, Jio is aiming to build critical 5G equipment in the country. However, Qualcomm may also supply its own 5G mobile chipset for the upcoming Jio 5G phone. The Snapdragon 480 5G is one of the chipmaker’s cheapest 5G mobile processors, but we could see a brand new SoC for an entry-level 5G phone.
